The recent mid-night raid conducted by the security arm of the Nigerian Army, Operation MESA, in the Oshodi, Ojota, Isolo and Mushin areas of Lagos state serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of electorates during the forthcoming general elections scheduled for 25th February, 2023.
The operation was aimed at cracking down on criminal hideouts and blackspots that could potentially be used by politicians to cause mayhem and destruction in case they are dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections.
Over 100 hoodlums and criminal elements were arrested during the operation. The suspects were found with dangerous weapons and charms, which they were most likely planning to use to create chaos and disrupt the electoral process. The weapons and charms seized serve as evidence of the malicious intent of the individuals, who were clearly poised to cause harm to innocent citizens during the elections.
It is commendable that the security arm of the Nigerian Army has taken proactive steps to prevent the occurrence of any form of violence or intimidation during the general elections.
The Federal Government has made it clear that it will not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice or disruption of the electoral process, and this operation serves as proof of its commitment to ensuring a free, fair and credible election.
According to the Army’s spokesman, “The safety and security of electorates are of utmost importance, and this operation is a clear indication that the government is willing to go to great lengths to ensure that citizens are protected. It is imperative that all Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnicity or political party’s affiliation feel secure while they go out to cast their votes, and this recent operation which will be a continuous one, has set the tone for a peaceful electoral process.
