There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari will meet with All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential aspirants ahead of the party’s primaries.According to reports, Buhari will use the meeting to help reduce the number of presidential candidates.
He is expected to ask them to accept the primary results, as he did during the APC presidential primary in 2014.
“The President will meet with the aspirants a few days before the primary to ensure unity and harmony.” He will also meet separately with the governors. The date has not yet been set, but it should be this week if INEC does not extend the primary deadline as we all hope,” an APC chieftain who requested anonymity told The PUNCH.
The President has identified a candidate. “The challenge will be how to present the idea to people like Tinubu,” he added.
When reached by phone, Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said he was unaware of such a meeting.
“As of now, I am not aware of any meeting,” he said.
According to the report, all APC presidential candidates, with the exception of former Lagos State governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, are open to reaching an agreement.
Other candidates are willing to withdraw if President Buhari chooses one of them to be his anointed candidate.
According to the Electoral Act, any candidate who agrees to resign must do so in writing.
According to The PUNCH, some major aspirants have begun approaching less popular aspirants with promises to refund the N100 million used to purchase the party’s form or promises of juicy appointments to drop their ambition and support theirs.
