PDP Crisis: Why I Chose Make Peace With Wike In London – Atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, decided to hold his reconciliation meeting with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in London, UK, in an effort to prevent interruption or distraction from other politicians.

According to Naija News, Atiku and Wike, along with a few governors, have been at odds ever before Atiku was announced as the PDP’s presidential candidate in May 2022. When Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, was announced as Atiku’s running mate on June 16, the crisis grew worse. All attempts to reach a consensus have failed.

Along with the governors of the states of Abia, Benue, Adamawa, and Oyo, Atiku met with Wike on Thursday in London. There were other PDP participants there, including Donald Duke.

To escape the numerous discussions and media smear campaigns already connected to the meetings, the parties concerned picked London.

An associate of Atiku who was privy with the meeting’s outcome told Saturday Sun that Atiku was successful in convincing Wike and other disgruntled governors to postpone their efforts to have PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu removed till elections are held next year. He claimed that Atiku’s argument was predicated on the threats it would present to the PDP’s electoral victory in the upcoming year.

He claimed that Wike and his associates sought several crucial seats for his camp when Atiku forms his cabinet if he wins next year’s presidential election but that they weren’t entirely committed to the proposal.

Wike expressed concerns about the behavior of Atiku’s followers, who have been accused of inciting violence, according to the top PDP member.

The source stated that Wike “gave their names and asked Atiku what responsibilities the individuals have performed since they left office in promoting the PDP.”

“Wike and other governors made that point very plain. They informed Atiku that the ticket belonged to the South. They informed him that the South needed to win important seats in the National Assembly now that he had been given the ticket.

“The President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, President of the Senate, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation cannot be from the North. In 2015, APC carried it out. PDP must not make the same error twice. Wike gave Atiku some of that, the source continued.

The PDP member claimed that the APC had exacerbated the situation. When the situation lingered, they were content. They wished it would never end. The wounds must be still fresh for them.

“Many believed Atiku wasn’t prepared to reconcile with Wike. Now that has been resolved. Although the crisis is not yet finished, the PDP has come a long way.

Unbeknownst to many, the camps of Atiku and Wike decided to arrange this meeting in a neutral location. Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa State and a close friend of both Wike and Atiku, orchestrated it.

“That is how they determined that London was the ideal location. They didn’t want any more conversations because there were already too many in Nigeria. There will be additional meetings after they return. The fact that no PDP governor or members will defect is now a certainty. PDP will enter this election as a single, cohesive unit.

Many Nigerians will be shocked by the reconciliation’s upcoming stage. Atiku still counts Peter Obi as a close ally. If ongoing negotiations go smoothly, there will be surprises in the upcoming weeks.

“I also believe that the party’s National Executive Committee meeting may be held prior to the start of the campaigns in September. We’ll just have to wait and see for now.
